Dr. Zakir Hussain was the third President of India whose term was from 13 May 1967 to 3 May 1969. Dr. Zakir Hussain was born on February 8, 1897 in a wealthy Pathan family of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. From where after some time his father had come to live in Uttar Pradesh.
Hussain became a member of the founding team of 'Jamia Millia Islamia University' at the age of only 23. In 1920, he contributed to the establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia and became its Vice-Chancellor.
After independence, he became the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh University and under his chairmanship the 'University Education Commission' was also constituted.
Apart from this, he was also associated with the Press Commission of India, University Grants Commission, UNESCO, International Education Service and Central Board of Secondary Education.
In 1962, he became the Vice President of India. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1963.
Due to his untimely death in 1969, he could not complete his presidential term. After which V.V. Giri became the caretaker president.
