Passage (Questions 96-100)
Cities across the world are rediscovering the bicycle. Faced with traffic jams, noise and polluted air, many municipal authorities have begun to build dedicated cycle lanes and to offer cheap bicycle-sharing schemes. Studies show that a short trip of less than five kilometres is often completed faster by bicycle than by car during peak hours, and it costs almost nothing. Cycling also keeps people fit, which reduces the burden on hospitals. However, the movement faces obstacles: narrow roads, a lack of safe parking and the fear of accidents discourage many from taking it up. Experts therefore argue that infrastructure, rather than persuasion alone, will decide whether the bicycle returns to the centre of urban life.
