Passage (Questions 96-100)
Honeybees do much more than produce honey. As they move from flower to flower in search of nectar, grains of pollen stick to their bodies and are carried to the next blossom, which makes it possible for plants to produce seeds and fruit. Scientists estimate that about one-third of the food that people eat depends, directly or indirectly, on pollination by insects, with bees doing the largest share of the work. In recent years, however, beekeepers in many countries have reported that their colonies are dying in large numbers. Researchers point to the loss of wildflower habitat, the heavy use of chemical pesticides and the spread of mites and diseases as the main causes. Farmers and city councils are now planting strips of flowers along fields and roadsides to give bees safe places to feed.
It can be inferred from the passage that a sharp fall in the number of bees could
- Ahelp the growth of wildflowers
- Bincrease the production of honey
- Creduce the use of pesticides
- Daffect the supply of food crops that depend on pollination
Correct answer: D
