In the evening, before sunset, X is facing towards the right hand side of the direction where his shadow is falling. He then turns right and walks 20 m. Then, he turns right again and walks 10 m. Then, he turns left and walks 10 m, and then turning right, he walks 20 m. Then, he turns right again and walks 30 m. At what distance and in which direction is X now from the starting point?

  • A30 m, north
  • B20 m, north
  • C30 m, south
  • D20 m, south
Correct answer: A

Explanation

In the evening the shadow falls towards the east, so X faces south. He then walks 20 m west, 10 m north, 10 m west, 20 m north and finally 30 m east. Net west-east movement = −20 − 10 + 30 = 0 and net north movement = 10 + 20 = 30 m. So X is 30 m north of the starting point.
